Melody Moon is an enchanting songwriter of the Great Ocean Road. Her songs reflect the environment in which she lives and creates.

Melody Moon (Melanie Rothman) grew up in the Stony Rises, South West Victoria, where she since a child has sung about nature and life. Moving from classical singing to musical theatre to jazz all in her teens, she then struck the chord of her unique style while on a roadtrip in her Kombi in 2008. After a stint of dance teaching and other jobs it became clear “Songwriting is my biggest passion and always has been”. She taught herself to play guitar and started winning songwriting awards as she travelled along the east coast. In 2009 she received the judge’s Songwriter Awards for a performance at Etihad Stadium as part of the Kool Skools Project. Wanting to get her songs out to the world she downloaded Logic in 2010 and spent some wintery months at her friends’ place in Preston creating her first CD. Little Hopes received widespread airplay with her song Out of the City reaching the top 10 on the Amrap AirIt Charts. She went on to record Carried Away in 2012, inviting her friends to play cello and trumpet, with similar chart success.

In 2012 Melody released her first full length album Down to the Sea, recorded in Burwood, Vic. “Just wonderful”– Sophie Longden, ABC radio. “A grower”– Tim Thorpe, RRR radio.

She’s been working hard since then writing new material and releasing a meditation music CD with joint project Sangara. 2016 saw her complete a 10-week songwriting challenge where she wrote, recorded and released one song every week from her van along the Great Ocean Road with solar power. Grabbing the attention of Melbourne producer Joe Oppenheimer, this lead to making Wings Out Open Wide, her new EP to be released May 27th 2017.

With a mix of recordings from her solar powered van and Melbourne sessions at Oaklands and 2Hz Studios, they’ve created a refreshingly unique EP that crosses from folk to indie to power pop. While true to Melody’s organic take on life it presents a pop sensibility that is equally appealing and bound to take off. Wings Out Open Wide will be OUT on bandcamp and i-tunes, and physical CD here: Launches happening in VIC: Surfcoast, Melbourne and Online.
